Hiring a Professional Designer vs DIY

Bathroom renovations and website updates have way more in common than you’d think.

We recently wrapped up a primary bathroom renovation at home, and the whole process instantly reminded me of what we see every day in website design at J. Alexandria Creative—because honestly? Renovations and website revamps follow the exact same pattern.

Identifying the Issues: Grungy Grout vs. Outdated Website

Our bathroom had “DIY energy” written all over it. Mismatched tile. Odd cuts. Grout that looked… tired. The closer you looked, the more it screamed, “Someone tried their best, but they were guessing.”

When we bought our home nearly a decade ago, we were thrilled just to own a house. The rose-colored glasses soon faded and the quality issues and cracks (literally) started showing.

Websites are the same. Many business owners start with no site or a quick DIY setup—super normal and honestly, sometimes necessary. But as your business grows, you eventually look up and realize:

  • Your offers are sharper
  • Your client experience is more elevated
  • Your website… hasn’t kept up

And suddenly, that old site feels off-brand, outdated, and a little embarrassing to send people to. (We’ve all been there.)

Update Timing: Bathroom vs. Website

When we first bought the house, a bathroom reno wasn’t realistic. Finances were tight, we had little kids, and I didn’t even know my own design style yet. Timing matters.

Same for websites.

Sometimes you’re early in your business and:

  • Your financials aren’t ready
  • Your offer suite is still developing
  • Your ideal client is shifting
  • Your message needs time to solidify

Those pieces become the foundation of a strong brand. If they’re not clear yet… it might not be website time.

But when your site feels outdated, DIY-ish, or just not “you” anymore?
That’s your sign the season has changed.

DIY or Hire the Pros

I’m convinced the motivational classroom posters from the 90s & 2000s rewired my brain. With Google and YouTube, I truly think I can do anything. But before renovating, my husband and I had to have a “reality check” meeting:

Bathroom DIY Thoughts:

  • “Can I really do this as well (or as fast) as a pro?”
  • “What if I mess up waterproofing and cause damage?”
  • “How many hours of YouTube will this take?”
  • “Will this completely derail my work and home life?”
  • “It’ll take pros 4 weeks… how long will it take me?”
  • “What if I finish it and it still looks bad?”

And business owners face the same questions with their websites:

Website DIY Thoughts:

  • “Can I build this as well as a professional designer?”
  • “What if I make mistakes that cost me traffic or sales?”
  • “How much Googling will I have to do to figure things out?”
  • “How many hours does this really take?”
  • “Can I do this without burning out?”
  • “How long until I can launch?”
  • “What if I finish and it looks amateur?”

We ultimately deciding hiring a professional was the best choice for our bathroom and I’m SO glad we did. Was it more expensive than DIY? Of course. But the peace of mind that everything was done correctly? Worth every penny.

The Speed of Experts

Two days.
That’s how long it took the tile team to handle my bathroom floors and walls.

Two. Days.

They measured, cut, and tiled with precision and speed because it’s what they do, day in and day out. If I had done it myself, it easily would’ve taken me a week (or two), and that’s with hours of Googling and double-checking every step.

This is exactly how our team works at JAC:

We can build brand identities in a week.
We launch complex websites in streamlined timelines.
We move with confidence, clarity, and strategy because this is our craft.

If You Have the Time to DIY, We Love That for You.

Truly—if you’re in a season where you have the time, brainpower, and desire to DIY your site without sacrificing your family or your business, that’s incredible.

But if you don’t?
We’re here to take everything off your plate: both the fun design parts and the unglamorous backend details.

Here’s what our team handles for you:

  • Visually stunning, elevated design
  • Strategic layout choices that keep people scrolling
  • SEO-friendly alt tags and backend structure
  • Fully functioning internal links
  • Domain setup (and chatting with support, so you don’t have to)
  • Email opt-in setup
  • Ad pixel installation if needed (we love paid ads)
  • and More (depending on what YOUR business needs to thrive)

You get a polished, professional website without the overwhelm.

If your business has outgrown your current website, or you’re ready to invest in something that finally reflects the level of your work, we’d love to help bring your vision to life. Hiring a professional team of designers will give you so much peach of mind for your business!

Just like my bathroom… sometimes it’s simply time for the upgrade. Reach out via our contact form to get started.
